Above is the lewis dot diagram for the element Iodine. It represents the number of valence electrons in an element. You can figure this out 2 different ways. One way is that you can make a bohr model and on the last layer the amount of dots is what you put on its lewis dot diagrams. The other way is by using the periodic table. If you look at what column your element is in then it will help you find out what your lewis dot diagram is going to look like. Using the periodic table way is the easier way but if you want to back up your answer or double check do it the other way. Just one more thing, when you put the dots on the lewis dot diagram you start at the top left and make one dot then go to the right of the symbol and make a dot the underneath then to the right. That is 4 and you keep doing that if you have more. Like Iodine has 7 so i did that same cycle for 3 more dots and thats how it looks.
